The Community Led Housing Project – Astry Close

The Community-led Housing Project has been set up to address some of the housing issues identified in the Community Plan and the Neighbourhood Development Plan.

The intention is to build approximately 40 new homes for sale and rent on the cleared site at Astry Close and for these homes to be aimed primarily at meeting the needs and hopes of Lawrence Weston residents. The project places residents at the heart of the process, including all stages of decision making and design. In the long term this development will continue to be community-led and bring wider benefits to the local area.

Local residents Amy Smith and David Chedzoy are joint Chairs or the Steering Group which also has members from Bristol City Council, Ambition Lawrence Weston and Bristol Community Land Trust. Funding has been raised from Power to Change, Bristol City Council, National CLT Network and the Ministry for Homes, Communities and Local Government

Lisa Denison is the Project Manager and can be contacted anytime at lisa.denison@virgin.net or on 07900 908391.

Updates:

  • The Steering Group appointed Barefoot Architects to design the scheme who will be involving and consulting residents throughout the summer. See the press release here
  • Thanks to the quality input from local residents over the spring and summer, the design team for Astry Close has been able to submit a comprehensive ‘Pre- application’ to the City Council’s planning team, in order to get some feedback on the way the designs for site are developing. The planners have provided some useful feedback and the next step is to meet with them and go through the team’s response and negotiate a mutually satisfactory way forward. The team are focused on making sure that the aspects that are important to residents are highlighted and well understood so that the scheme delivers what the community needs and is helping to develop.
  • Following the meeting, the focus will be on the final phase of design, working towards a planning application in early Spring. Landscape architects have recently been appointed and the chosen firm is LT Studios, who are delighted to be part of the team. They are looking forward to discussing the public realm, green space and planting ideas with residents and we will be organising some further consultation in early December. We hope you residents will come and help decide how this looks.
  • Other work on the scheme includes developing a local lettings plan for the site  in partnership with United Communities and Bristol City Council, looking at how energy is delivered to the homes, thinking about the best  ‘tenure mix’ to make the scheme viable and deliver what is needed locally, exploring how the homes will be managed, maintained and stewarded over the long term, and last but not least securing funding for the project to keep it moving forward and build the homes.
